The Flippancy Of Nuclear Weapons
<Song Ends>
Announcer: You’re listening to CPRFM, evenings with Kate and Fitz.
Fitz: Kate are you watching the latest goings-on in Ukraine?
Kate: At the start I was, and now… I try to at least.
Fitz: The longer it drags on right?
Kate: Right. It’s hard to know what the latest is because it’s getting bumped further and further down in the news cycle.
Fitz: Right, well… Not to sing from the song sheet of our rival networks, but I was listening to the radio last night on my way home from here.
Kate: And you weren’t listening to CPR?
Fitz: I was adjusting alright! Adjusting!
Kate: haha, okay then.
Fitz: And anyway, I was listening away and there was this BBC news service offering that featured an interview with the Slovakian prime minister. Now Slovakia shares a border with Ukraine, amongst many other nations.
Kate: Right.
Fitz: And they talked non-stop about nuclear weapons, the potential use of them. Putin’s threats to use them etc etc. Then there was discussion that the Russians had developed a low range nuclear warhead that wouldn’t be as destructive in terms of long-term damage.
Kate: Okay…
Fitz: It got me thinking.
Kate: Uh oh.
Fitz: no, no hear me out. This has been the first major european conflict in over 70 years.
Kate: Not the only conflict.
Fitz: Okay, granted, I’ll give you that. Certainly the most substantial since world war two.
Kate: Yes.
Fitz: So… very flippant discussion of nuclear weapons don’t you think?
Kate: I don’t know.
Fitz: People don’t realise, if a nuclear weapon is used, the land with which the payload was dropped becomes uninhabitable for tens of thousands of years.
Kate: I think they do realise that.
Fitz: Well, they certainly haven’t had the education the way the baby boomers endured back in the cold war days. It’s over if nucs are used. People just need to know that it is not an option.
Kate: Okay, so you think there’s a flippancy in regards to the rhetoric around the use of Nuclear weapons in this conflict.
Fitz: Big time!
Kate: Well, I would say that that is just coming from you. I don’t see any evidence of that.
